  1. Log in to your Google Account (if not)
  2. Click on the Google Apps or visit docs.google.com
  3. Find the File you want to add page number automatically to all pages
  4. Then click on the File to open it
  5. Click on the Insert menu from the top left side
  6. Then select Page Number from the menu
  7. It will show you Four Styles of the Page number

Here are four styles or options for how to add page number on Google Docs:

  1. Choose to add page number to every page to the Top-right

  1. Open a document on Google Docs
  2. Go to the Insert menu from the top left side
  3. Select the Page Number option
  4. Then click on the More options from the Submenu
  5. A Page Number dialog box will to you on your screen now you can choose you’re the following
    • Position: Under the Position section you can choose the following below two option
      1. Tick the Header or Footer: If you want to appear the page number in Header and Footer then select the Footer on one. (Select header then it will show the page number in the header only)
      2.  Show on The First-page checkbox: If you want to hide the page number on the First page then tick the checkbox.
    • Numbering: Here you can enter numbering to your page from any page or continue from the previous section

How to Add Page Number Using Format Menu

You can also use the Format menu to add page number in Google Docs in the following steps:

  1. Open Google Docs File
  2. Go to Format Menu
  3. Scroll down select Page Number option from the menu
  4. A Page Number dialog box will open on your screen
  5. When the Page Number dialog box will to you on your screen now you can choose the following
    • Position: Under the Position section you can choose the following below two option
      1. Tick the Header or Footer: If you want to appear the page number in Header and Footer then select the Footer on one. (Select header then it will show the page number in the header only)

You can also use the Format menu to add page number in Google Docs in the following steps

  1. Open Google Docs File
  2. Go to the Insert menu and select Header & Footer
  3. Click on the Header or Footer from submenu or you can direct click in Header or Footer where you want to add page numbers

The difference between Google Doc & MS Word

There is only one caveat to Google Docs adding numbering system is that you can only ever skip the 1st page of a file. It does not have the same kinds of options a fuller word process like MS Word provides, which let’s do many things like change the numbering with each section or have even and odd page number shown in multiple locations.

How to Remove the Number on the First Page

If you would rather the 1st page have a different number, or even add a title in the header/footer. You have page numbers on all pages of your file, but you do not want to appear the page number on the first page.  Then remove the number from the first page. This does not affect the numbering of all pages in the file, meaning on the second page, for instance, remain page number two. You can now replace the page number with whatever you like in the following below steps:

  3. Go the First page of the doc file

  5. Then Tick the checkbox beside Different first page

  8. Select anywhere outside the Header or Footer
  9. On the First page number will no longer appear
  10. Page numbering will start from the 2nd page and the second page will appear with numbered as page two.

How to Align a Page Number

When add the page number then by default appear to the margin of the file. However, you can align the as you can move left or center in the following steps:

  1. Go to Google docs
  2. Go the page of docs file
  3. Click on the Header or Footer anywhere the page is located
  4. Click on the Toolbar and press either Center Align or Left Align
  5. Then the page number will move to the selected place where you want to center or left align
  6. Go to the toolbar and select either Left Align or Center Align.

Once you change your mind and want to remove the page number you add to Google docs. Here are the steps to delete page numbers:

  1. Open your Google Docs File
  2. Then click on the Header or Footer anywhere the page number located
  3. Now Select the Page Number and Right-click or just hit the Backspace button
  4. Then click on the Delete option from the menu and the page numbers will delete from all pages
  5. You can also click on the Header or Footer and click on the Options drop-down from the right side of header or footer where the page numbers located
  6. Select the Remove Header or Remove Footer
