The USA TODAY received a statement by email, according to YouTube that its partnership with Roku company for an entirely new device to access YouTube applications will end in December. But the current Roku owners will still be able to access the YouTube app and YouTube TV, the company’s live TV platform.
YouTube also said it was working on an agreement with Ruko to benefit its mutual users.

On Thursday, Roku put out a blog post regarding an update on the negotiations with YouTube parent company Google, cursing Google and other big tech companies. The companies have totally different points of view on what’s happening.
Roku said in the update: “Rather than embracing a mutually beneficial partnership approach, some Big Tech enterprises are using their market power to extend control over independent businesses, like Roku, to benefit their broader business objectives at the expense of the consumer, putting a fair and open competitive streaming marketplace at risk,”
YouTube called Roku’s claims baseless and unproductive in its statement.
In the month of April, Roku said it was pulling YouTube TV from its streaming device after its agreement to carry it lapsed.
As we shared in April, the threat remains that Google may remove YouTubeTV from the Roku platform. We continue to believe that streamers stand to benefit from Google and Roku reaching a fair agreement and we remain committed to trying to achieve that goal. For Roku, this is about maintaining our independence, protecting our customers, and ensuring healthy competition in the streaming industry that benefits millions of consumers.
In reply, Google posted a blog post claiming it wanted to renew its deal with Roku under current circumstances, but Roku sought to renegotiate a separate deal involving the primary YouTube app. Google then added access and use to YouTube TV through the main YouTube app.
Google posted on the negotiations, and the company said: “Since our negotiations with Roku earlier this year, we’ve continued to work with them to find a resolution that benefits our mutual users. Roku has once again chosen to make unproductive and baseless claims rather than try to work constructively with us. Since we haven’t been able to continue our conversations in good faith, our partnership for all-new Roku devices will unfortunately end on December 9. We are, however, giving Roku the ability to continue distributing both YouTube and YouTube TV apps to all existing users to make sure they are not impacted.”
When it comes down to these kinds of disputes between companies, the customers are the ones who ultimately end up losing, as they are not able to get access to the content they wish.
While it is good that Google will still update the application for users using old devices, exactly with the holiday shopping season right around the corner the could be a lot of disappointment for Roku buyers who cannot get one of the biggest video platforms on their new devices on the internet
Of course, there’s always an opportunity for the two companies to meet between now and the deadline, but we will have to wait and see.
